What to do After an Accident You must report your accident, seek medical attention and speak to a lawyer.
A word of caution: if you make a fraudulent workers compensation claim there are severe penalties that apply. Also note that willful injuries can not be legally claimed. Has your accident been reported ?
You must report your accident to the relevant authority:
- In a motor vehicle accident you must report the accident to the police.
- In a work related accidents the employer must be informed. Every work place is required to keep a register of injuries, and your injury must be recorded.
- In the case of a slip or fall the occupier of the premises must be informed of the accident.
- In the case of an assault (if you are injured as a result of an act of violence) report it to the police.
Have you sought medical attention ? You must seek immediate medical attention and be sure to follow medical advice. If you accident is work related you must obtain a work cover certificate from your doctor.
Importantly: With any kind of accident you have an obligation to do the best to look after yourself so you can get back to work (if you are off work). For this reason it is essential that you follow all the steps recommended by your medical practitioner.
